Your technical work is amazing. However, your design needs work. It is very busy and needs to be economized. Also there is not much movement in the composition and the girl in the middle takes up all the dominance.

And the WIP coloured version. I'm still adding the shading, but thoughts and suggestions on this is also welcome.

I'll be away for a week with little internet access, so I won't be able to work on any suggestions right away I'm afraid, though I will act on them when I'm back.

I kinda prefer the lineart layer version. Something about the colored version makes it lose its appeal...

Well First off its to thin. I strecher the image a little in photoshop to widen the face and body.

Her left leg is way to thin and needs to be beffed up a bit. Her shoulders are a little wonky as well.

Image is a little rough as I don't have my wacom tablet hooked up yet ( new install)

and I forgot the image.

Coloring what? I deem the coloring already present sufficient, you might want to add a few more tones to the hair maybe. Perhaps a few folds on the kimono, the sleeve in particular. What bothers me though is that hand, it ruins an otherwise good picture. Find good reference, draw hands in various situations until your fingers bleed. Then, make a new one for this picture now do it.

I couldn't find a hand in this position.... I tried. :< do you know of any good hand references?

You might want to rethink the way she's holding the fan alltogether. I'd do sum redlining but tbh I don't feel like it right now.

I use a camera with a screen that rotates and take pictures of my hand in the pose I need.

Then do what I do and draw your left hand in that position on a piece of tracing paper then turn the paper over. Presto a right hand in the correct position.

Yes exactly be creative. Besides you can flip shit in your own head, the idea isn't that you should copy your own hand straight off, I mean maybe you don't even want her hands to look like yours. Maybe you want to make them more delicate, maybe you want to make her fingers longer etc.
The idea is that you should have a true, living object to get the general idea from, to draw good conclusions when you place out your lines and colors.
If you just copy things straight off without thinking it will take ages for you to work the concept of them into your head. You could have copied a thousand bodies from real life in this manner, but when you sit down to do one without reference it will still look like shit. You might get the proportions right, the colors, some rudimentary shading and all the basic things, but you'll have to do it in a stiff and uninspired way.
If you always think about what you're seeing, how it works, how you work it from sight to concept to drawing, it will make life easier and your work better.

Ok I got a question for you: how do you get those textures for her kimono?

I'm guessing, but they're probably custom brushes. You can make any image a custom brush in PS.

When I do patterns I just do a search for patterns on google image search and mask them into the picture.
