EBM stands for "Electronic Body Music" which is a horrible term that you can probably blame the '90s for. It basically encompasses all danceable electronic music.

Well, the way it was kind of explained to me was that synths are distorted to the point where they sound like guitars, mostly. This is the live aspect.
