"In a stroke of cosmic luck, astronomers for the first time witnessed the start of one of the universe's most fiery events: the end of a star's life as it exploded into a supernova.

""It's like winning the astronomy lottery," said lead author Alicia Soderberg, an astrophysics researcher"

"The Bush administration relied on a flawed study to conclude that research on a highly infectious animal disease could safely be moved from an isolated island laboratory to sites on the mainland near livestock, congressional investigators concluded"

"The GAO report listed six other accidents between 1971 and 2004.

"These incidents involved human error, lack of proper maintenance, equipment failure and deviation from standard operating procedures," the GAO said. "Many were not a function of the age of the facility or the lack of technology and could happen in any facility today." "

"Senators OK $1 billion for online child porn fight

A U.S. Senate panel has unanimously approved a bill that would encourage federal, state, and local police to use and create special software designed to nab child pornography swappers on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks."

"An amendment adopted Thursday also adds new sections to the original bill that would rewrite existing child pornography laws. One section is designed to make it clear that live Webcam broadcasts of child abuse are illegal, which the bill's authors argue is an "open question." Another change is aimed at closing another perceived loophole, prohibiting digital alteration of an innocent image of a child so that sexually explicit activity is instead depicted."

QUESTION: If one takes sexually suggestive photos of a child without them knowing of it and MILLIONS of people see the photo over a decade or so, is the child harmed as each person sees it or do they only suffer the abuse when they hear about it?
Also, what is the sound of one hand clapping?

>> No.6580

potentially, because those people might encounter the child on the street and say "oh! you're the one who i saw getting deep dicked by her stepdad on the internets", causing a recurrance of emotional trauma

>>Also, what is the sound of one hand clapping?

The sound made when you clap the fingers of your hand into the palm. The sound doesn't have much volume, but it is there.

And for my next trick, solving Schrodinger's Cat paradox by either putting a wireless video camera in the box, or making the box out of transparent Perspex.

But by doing that you are observing the cat, so you know if the poison was released or not.

But it's a scientific experiment, is it not? (even if it's merely a philosophical question) And what is the basis, nay the point of scientific experiments? OBSERVATION. As in SEEING the results of said experiment. If you CAN'T observe what happens, then there's no point in the experiment. Besides, when this idea of a cat in a box was thought up, they'd never heard of small video cameras, nor transparent materials. Besides, why not do said experiment with TWO transparent boxes, cats etc, then you can 'have your cake & eat it', as it were.

>even if it's merely a philosophical question

It isn't. The point of the experiment is to show how retarded Copenhagen's interpretation is. You don't know if the atom has decayed and released the poison until you observe it since you can't figure out if it would have decayed before hand. If you observe it there is no point in the experiment.

"Strong, versatile little "nanotubes" made out of carbon are considered future stars in nanotechnology research in medicine and industry. Now a study finds that longer threads of the stuff mimic the toxic qualities of asbestos, renewing questions about how carbon nanotubes can be used safely.

Researchers with British institutes and the U.S.-based Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies injected mice with asbestos and with commercial samples of carbon nanotubes of varying sizes. When they examined the lining of the rodents' abdominal cavities, the researchers observed that longer nanotubes behaved like asbestos, provoking inflammation and lesions."

"Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer scrambled for cover from an egg-hurling protester during a talk at a Hungarian university Monday.

Unlike his boss, Chairman Bill Gates, who was hit in the face with a cream pie a decade ago, Ballmer managed to dodge the eggs.

Ballmer was delivering a speech entitled "You can change the world" to a group of business and technology students at Budapest's Corvinus University when the incident occurred"

"A young man in glasses stood up, pointed at Ballmer and loudly demanded that Microsoft return money it had stolen from the Hungarian people. Then he calmly threw three eggs at Ballmer."

MOSCOW (AFP) — The final members of a Russian doomsday cult on Friday quit the cave where they had been waiting six months for the end of the world after the stench of rotting corpses threatened them with intoxication"

"they decided to leave because there was "a real threat of poisoning from toxic corpse fumes" of two deceased cult members rotting in the cave.

The sect members were part of an ultra-Orthodox splinter group led by bearded guru Pyotr Kuznetsov, who instructed them to go underground last November in wait for the world's end."

" TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico - A donkey is doing time in southern Mexico for assault and battery.

"Many states leave behind education law"

"More than 20 states have procrastinated in meeting the No Child Left Behind law's requirement that all students reach grade-level proficiency by 2014 and will be hard-pressed to make needed improvements before the deadline, a report released today shows."

""The essence of it is that unless Herculean efforts are made, the goal of reaching proficiency for all children will not be met," said Jack Jennings, president and chief executive officer of CEP, a national independent group that advocates for effective public schools. He compared the states' situation to "a mortgage payment that is about to balloon far beyond [a homeowner's] current ability to pay.""
