"BAN LOMTUAN, Thailand - Preecha Jiabyu used to take tourists on a rowboat to see the banks of the Mae Klong River aglow with thousands of fireflies. These days, all he sees are the fluorescent lights of hotels, restaurants and highway overpasses. He says he'd have to row a good two miles to see trees lit up with the magical creatures of his younger days."The firefly populations have dropped 70 percent, in the past three years," said Preecha, 58, a former teacher who started providing dozens of row boats to compete with polluting motor boats. "It's sad. They were a symbol of our city."""No single factor is blamed, but researchers in the United States and Europe mostly cite urban sprawl and industrial pollution that destroy insect habitat. Wow, That's something I haven't thought of, With the whole Georgia stuff we may loose the ability to launch mission payloads and crews up to the ISS for a while. I know the Europeans and Japanese are working on unmanned resupply boats but they're not human rated and you can't bring back people with them.
the space shuttle is a pile of dogshit. The Saturn V was far more capable and far cheaper and far safer.

Who would've thought! People have only been saying it for decades.
Because up to now it was anecdotes and hearsay. Much like "living under a powerline gives you cancer" used to be anecdotes and hearsay, but now known not to be true.
It's not the powerlines, it's the hermetically sealed life of the city where people disinfect everything and live in air conditioned houses with doors and windows shut. Without being stimulated to defended against bacteria, your immune system goes apeshit on harmless stuff like dust and pollen. That's why you have bad allergies.

Why can't we just vote "NO" on all of them and get new candidates if we don't like the ones we have now?
Just vote third party if you don't like the 2 major paries. America despreately needs a third party anyway.

>>8253 More damage? She actually breathed some life back into our dying economy; cut off the massive subsidies and tariffs to protect our inflated, and now parasitic coal industry. If people like Scargill had held as much power at the dawn of humanity as the workers unions did in the 80s, we'd never have even had the plow, as he would have been amongst those smashing them. You are probably misinformed by old Union and Labour propaganda. Thatcher wasn't some demon destroying a perfectly good industry. The strike was caused by Thatcher wishing to close mines that were operating at heavy losses, and bring in more modern machinery in those that didn't. The trade unions acted disgracefully, enforcing strikes without a vote, laundered their money to prevent a pair of miners who sued them for their illegal action receiving compensation, and harassing those that actually wanted to work, and their families as well. Trade unionist thugs killed an innocent taxi driver in their crazed attempts to stop people working, and blockaded and harassed NACODS members who weren't even striking. Scargill was a power crazed madman; nothing more. And if you want to know why coal mining was really inefficient, we were digging pits deep underground whereas in other areas of the world coal can run close to the surface, and can be quarried out in a far more efficient, and more environmentally friendly (yes, quarrying is a little better than pit mining. The only real enviromental complaints are it looks ugly, but it only affects a [relatively] small area, whereas pit mining leaves the entire surrounding area unsafe, and poisons a wide area.) method. Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
