"About three-quarters of flowering plants rely on birds, bees and other pollinators to help them reproduce. Bee pollination is responsible for $15 billion annually in crop value.

In 2006, beekeepers began reporting losing 30 percent to 90 percent of their hives. "

"The cause behind the disorder remains unknown. Possible explanations include pesticides; a new parasite or pathogen; and the combination of immune-suppressing stresses such as poor nutrition, limited or contaminated water supplies and the need to move bees long distances for pollination."

"The House Appropriations Committee approved $780,000 on Thursday for research on the disorder and $10 million for bee research."

"Angry politicians vowed to keep writing laws that condemn child rapists to death, despite a Supreme Court decision saying such punishment is unconstitutional.

"Anybody in the country who cares about children should be outraged that we have a Supreme Court that would issue a decision like this," said Alabama Attorney General Troy King, a Republican."

"The court's 5-4 decision Wednesday derailed the efforts of nearly a dozen states supporting the right to kill those convicted of raping a child — and said execution was confined to attacks that take a life and to other crimes including treason and espionage."

Honestly, life in prison as a child rapist sounds worse than death. Child rapists aren't exactly given a warm welcome in the prison community.

>> No.7166

On the other hand, death penalty for a 18-year old who engages in consensual sex with his 17-year old classmate is hardly appropriate either. Remember, in the US a minor cannot give consent and thus fucking a minor is automatically child rape unless you're under 18 yourself (in which case it's mutual child rape).

Putting more and better equipped police on the street: expensive
Handing out death penalties: priceless (and free)

So if death is out of the picture, What about waterboarding?

Last I heard the costs of a death penalty trial are somewhere around $2 million

"JERUSALEM - Israeli security guards have whisked away French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert during an airport departure ceremony.

Police say there was no assassination attempt on Sarkozy but it is unclear what brought about the abrupt end to the ceremony. Israeli media have issued conflicting reports on the incident.

An Israeli official at the scene says a soldier fainted on the tarmac, leading to fears that he had been shot."

What I heard was, the soldier committed suicide with his own rifle.

>> No.7153

Yeah.

"police found burns on one of Ghanem's hands, where he held the barrel of his gun, and gunpowder residue on the other, where he pulled the trigger."

Now, why would they report it as "fainting"? I smell goodfacts.

>> No.7168

Yeah.

"Members of his family in the village of Beit Jan in northern Israel said he had been married for eight years with two children and owned his own house.

"We scornfully reject the claims that our son took his own life," a family member said.

"He was a kindhearted and happy person.

"He had a family and there was no reason for him to do such a horrible thing."

His brother, Nayef, said he did not believe in the suicide theory.

"He had no reason to take his own life," he said.

"Intel, the giant chip maker and longtime partner of Microsoft, has decided against upgrading the computers of its own 80,000 employees to Microsoft’s Vista operating system, a person with direct knowledge of the company’s plans said."

"“This isn’t a matter of dissing Microsoft, but Intel information technology staff just found no compelling case for adopting Vista,” the person said."

"RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A sharp increase in drugs and cellphones found inside a Brazilian prison mystified officials -- until guards spotted some distressed pigeons struggling to stay airborne.

Inmates at the prison in Marilia, Sao Paulo state had been training carrier pigeons to smuggle in goods using cell phone sized pouches on their backs, a low-tech but ingenious way of skipping the high-tech security that visitors faced.

"We have sophisticated equipment to search people when they go in, but they avoided this by finding another way to bring in cellphones and drugs," prison director Luciano Gamateli told Globo TV."

Many of the opinions about WaiWai asked the Mainichi about whether it had thought about what effect reporting to the world these stories in English would have, or that these articles would lead to a spread of misinformation about Japan.
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/culture/waiwai/

The writer was Australian who had lived in Japan for 2 years. And it seemed that this guy had been criticized a lot. Hope his family's OK...

Anyway, you shouldn't really believe what tabloid says and shouldn't write a news article based on what you see on other company's tabloid magazines. And when you do, you have to make sure your audience knows it's tabloid. That's all the problem was.

"Mark Evans, a retired Air Force sergeant, has taken it upon himself to send hundreds of Chicago-style pizzas to soldiers who will be in Iraq and Afghanistan on the Fourth of July.

The Daily Herald says Evans got Lou Malnati's to give him a discount on deep-dish pizzas and DHL Global to ship the frozen pies at no charge. At first, he planned to send 300 pizzas. That number has grown exponentially since reporters learned about the plan. AP says they're now set to ship 3,000 pies."
