Honestly, life in prison as a child rapist sounds worse than death. Child rapists aren't exactly given a warm welcome in the prison community.
On the other hand, death penalty for a 18-year old who engages in consensual sex with his 17-year old classmate is hardly appropriate either. Remember, in the US a minor cannot give consent and thus fucking a minor is automatically child rape unless you're under 18 yourself (in which case it's mutual child rape).
